300 is based on the historical Battle of Thermopylae. Where 300 Greek Spartans fought over 200,000 Persians as they attempted in invade Greece. Though they technically lost the battle, they damaged the persian army to extent where they were not able to continue their invasion of Greece. The movie is faithfully reproduces from a short comic book series by Frank Miller (creator of Sin City). It is Frank's unique style that is portrayed in this movie (similar to the unique stylings of the Sin City movie). The story takes liberties with historical facts ( like proraying the persians as monsters) but the idea of the battle remains largely the same.
